The whole notion that hardware has a significant impact on resonance seems kind of silly in light of the endless array of dampening mechanisms drummers employ.

My Yammie is pre-yes, and allows the hex post to go through the drum shell. I've never noticed any difference in sound of any nature regardless of how far up the post I mount the toms.

PS: My 12" tom is a great drum. My 13, THAT's another story.

PPS: My Yammie hardware is over 25 years old and aside from some very sparse, very slight pitting on some of those old wedge shaped lugs, is in perfect condition - solid as a rock.

No doubt Yamaha hardware is better now, but mine was from their first generation. Once bitten, twice shy.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I have had the same problem with resonance, and have spend pretty much time in finding out which suspension system that works - YESS doesn't work (and neither is Optimount a choice for me!) - and YESS is really not a suspension system, though.
Take the tom off of the mount; tune it to its best; put it back on the mount. A true good working (suspension) mounting system will NOT cource lack of resonance, when the tom is put back on. How many mounting system can pass that test?! (which really is the background of developing the RIMS!)

Check out the Australian Drums, Sleishman. This is a VERY unique suspension system , though the top head and the bottom head are tuned at the same time. I've tried these drums, and they are just amazing - lots of resonance (can there be too much? ).

And by the way, I don't mount the rack toms on the bass drum (this enhances the sound of the bass drum too ;-)) The toms are on stands with clamps. Therefore I haven't had any problems in having the toms close to each other.

When I was shopping for a kit last year, I WANTED to get the Yamaha Maple A.N. but couldn't get the 10 OR the 12 to tune to save my life. I got them to sound GREAT off the mount, but as soon as I put them on the stand, pure ASS. Dead as a nail.

The combination I have now is perfect to me: Gretsch 70s shells, RIMS mounts, DW mounts and hardware. Best of the best IMHO.
